Israel Tour: 6 - 14 October 2018
Day | Itinerary |
Sat 06-10 | Departure from Johannesburg in SA at 21:40 with EL AL airline Overnight and dinner on board flight. |
Sun 07-10 | Caesarea Maritima - Mount Carmel - Armageddon Valley - Galilee. Our luxury bus will meet us at 8:30 at Ben Gurion Airport. We start our Israel tour at Cesarea on the Mediterranean coast. Here, Herod built his magnificent harbor and summer palace where Paul was detained for two years before being sent to Rome. Ceasarea was also Pontius Pilate's headquarters and this is where Peter baptized the first christian, Cornelius. After that we continue to Galilee and stop at Mount Carmel (Muhraka) where Elijah defeated the Baal prophets. From here there is a magnificent view of the Armageddon valley. Overnight Galilee. |
Mon 08-10 | Cana - Nazareth - Mount Tabor - Jesus boat - Boating on the Sea of Galilee. Our hotel is located on the banks of the lake, so it is possible to walk or pray at sunrise along the lake. After breakfast we will explore Galilee. We drive through Kana, the town where Jesus did His first miracle. We then travel to Nazareth and visit the "Nazareth Village" to see and experience how life was in Jesus' time. We also visit Maria's fountain where Angel Gabriel appeared to her. There is an opportunity for a light lunch in one of the street cafes here. After lunch, we visit the imposing sandstone Franconian church on Mount Tabor, the mountain of glory. After that we return to the Sea of Galilee to see the impressive 'Jesus Boat', a 2000 year old fishing boat that is dug up next to the lake. We end the day with a boat trip on the Sea of Galilee. Overnight Galilee. |
Tue 09-10 | Capernaum - Mount of Bliss - Tabgha - Magdala - Sesarea Filippi (Banyas) - Jordan River. Today we are going to walk literally in the footsteps of Jesus. After a quiet breakfast, we travel northwards. Every hour in the Holy Land is precious. We will go to Magdala, the ancient village where Mary Magdalene lived, Capernaum, where Jesus lived the greatest part of His life, the Mount of Blessings and Tabgha, according to tradition, where the miracle of the fish and breeding multiplication took place, as well as the place where Jesus appeared to the disciples after his resurrection and prepared for them a meal. After lunch we go to Sesarea Filippi where Jesus concluded His earthly teaching before going to Jerusalem to be crucified. We are in the place where Jesus asked His disciples, "Who do you say I am," and Peter answers, "You are Christ, the Son of God." This is what Jesus said to Peter, "You are the rock on which my church will be built." What a special moment and place to visit! We finish the day at Yardenit on the banks of the Jordan River where thousands of Christians have already followed Jesus through the baptismal waters. Here, therefore, there will be an optional baptismal opportunity for tour members who would like to be baptized. Overnight Galilee. |
Wed 10-10 | Jordan Valley - Qumran - Masada - Dead Sea. We greet Galilee and depart southwards. Towards the Dead Sea we drive through the Jordan Valley and past the strategic crossing between Jordan and Jezreel valleys. Before lunch, we visit Qumran where the Dead Sea parchment rolls were discovered by a Bedouin herdsman about 100 years ago. Now we travel south through the desert of Judea and visit the magnificent mountain Masada. We have lunch here, where we climb Masada by cable car. Here Herod built his winter palace. Get a glimpse of Herod's wealth and fears, but also realize how about 1000 Jewish refugees occupied this mountain after the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Their story continues to be one of the most engaging events in the history of the Jews today. We then leave for our hotel on the banks of the Dead Sea where we will only relax for the rest of the afternoon. Go for a swim (or rather float) in the Dead Sea or go for a mud bath, Cleopatra's secret to beauty. Overnight Dead Sea. |
Thu 11-10 | One Gedi Oasis - Ahava Dead Sea Products Factory - Jerusalem. After breakfast, we start our day with the Ein Gedi Oase. We follow King David's tracks where he hid for Saul and later for his own son, Absolom, in caves (still to be seen today). Here he wrote many of his Psalms. Words like "to waters where rest is ..." begin to get meaning. This oasis is still in full swing and beautiful in the deserted desert. We greet the Judean desert area and travel further to the city of all cities: Jerusalem. On our way we stop at the Avaha Dead Sea products factory for those who want to do purchases. After dinner there is an optional opportunity to attend the "Spectacular Sound & Light Show" at the David Citadel. Actually an impressive performance. Overnight and Evening Jerusalem. |
Fri 12-10 | Israel Museum - Yad Vashem - Knesset - Bethlehem. Our day begins with a general overview of Jerusalem, after which we can see the Israel Museum with the scale model of the city in the 2nd Temple period, as well as the "Shrine of the Book", where the Dead Sea displays parchment rolls. Today we move a little closer to the heart of the Jewish people - God's people. After this we pass the Knesset (Israel Parliament) and see the giant Menorah before the building. Late in the morning we visit the Yad Vashem - largest Holocaust memorial center in the world. We would like to spend some time here ... and remember. After lunch, we visit Bethlehem (next to Jerusalem) and the Shepherd Fields as well as the Birth Church. We will be back in Jerusalem before Sabbath to enjoy the Sabbath meal with other Jews and to understand the miracle of the Sabbath. Overnight Jerusalem. |
Sat 13-10 | Olive Mountain - Paternoster - Getsemane - Lion Gate - Via Dolorosa - Bethesda - Holy Grave - Garden Tomb. Today is the Sabbath and the streets of Jerusalem are silent. Our day begins on the Mount of Olives. We visit the special Paternoster church and see the breathtaking view of Jerusalem. We then descend to the garden of Getsémané with olive trees of more than 2,000 years old. We spend a while in a private part of the garden and keep quiet to remember how Jesus once asked His disciples to pray with Him in His night of killing. Now we enter the old town through the Lion Gate. This is also where Stephanus died of a torture death. We visit Bethesda and see the Ecce Homo arch. Then we walk along the Via Dolorosa and various suffering stations to the holy grave. After lunch, we walk through the Muslim market and end the day with a visit to the Garden Tomb. Here we will use our communion and ensure in the footsteps of Angels and a risen Lord! Overnight Jerusalem. |
Sun 14-10 | Wailing Wall - City of David - Siloam Bath - Southern Temple Steps - Mispoort. We start our last day with a visit to the 'city of David' with excavations dating back to the First Temple! Here is Hiskia's tunnel still in place as well as the Siloam bath where Jesus healed the blind man. Our excursion ends in the area of the Southern Temple Steps (only access to the Second Temple in Jesus' time). This promises to be an absolute highlight of our tour. We move past the Mispoort to the Wailing Wall. Pray with the Jews here at the remaining part of the Second Temple and holiest place for modern Jews. What a highlight to close our Israel visit! We leave for lunch in the old city airport to take our flight back to SA. Overnight and dinner onboard the flight. |
Mon 15-10 | Arriving in South Africa. Arrives around 6:00 PM at OR Tambo International in South Africa. |
